Killer of the Environment

Globalization is a complex process. It is the process by which people around the world are becoming increasingly interconnected. To the people that support globalization, the benefits outweigh the costs it brings. It's a whole different story when it comes to the critics. The critics say that the costs outweigh the benefits. Globalization is effecting the environment and persistence of poverty in the world. Not only has globalization failed to solve these problems, it could possibly making them worse.
Environmentalists do not blame all the environmental problems on globalization. They mostly worry about the impact that rapid economic growth has on the environment. By putting profits first, markets overlook the environmental costs economic activity has on the environment. Environmentalists think development should be sustainable over time. Sustainable development is designed to meet people's present needs without having a negative impact on future generations' ability to meet their needs. Unfortunately, most current development is not sustainable.
Globalization may encourage multinational corporations to move their operations to "pollution havens." A pollution haven is a country that attracts polluting industries because of its weak or poorly enforced environmental laws. Many cars are being bought, therefore, fossil fuels are being produced to power them. This is causing pollution almost everywhere. As the economies of developing countries grow, their consumption of fossil fuels increases as well. This adds more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. If nothing is done to reduce these emissions, the effect on the environment could be devastating.
